By upgrading its lighting system with TECTON II, the Porsche Parts Distribution Centre (TVZ) has improved the quality of light and reduced energy consumption in certain areas of the halls by up to 40 per cent.

Lighting for delivery quality at the highest level

Up to 40% lower power consumption in individual areas of the hall

The Porsche TVZ in Wals-Siezenheim near Salzburg is the central hub for supplying service centres with spare parts for the Volkswagen Passenger Cars and Commercial Vehicles, Škoda, SEAT, CUPRA, Audi and Porsche group brands in 18 countries. With nearly 360 employees, it ensures the supply of more than 800 dealers and delivers 25,000 items every day. To support the zero-defect strategy, reduce power consumption and raise working conditions to a premium level across all areas, the lighting was upgraded in spring 2026 with the TECTON II continuous-row lighting system and the TECTON D retrofit variant.

Committed to the parent company’s sustainability goals

Porsche Immobilien GmbH is responsible for the structural and infrastructural development of the logistics site and is committed to the sustainability goals of its parent company. It therefore stipulated the renovation of the lighting in the oldest building (Hall 1) in its sustainability programme. PBR Engineering GmbH was commissioned to carry out the lighting design.
Hall 1 was built in 1984 and has a floor area of around 24,000 square metres, as well as ceiling heights of 8.5 and 13.5 metres. The higher section of the hall contains a high-bay warehouse and 16 storage lifts (vertical shuttles). Small and medium-sized parts are picked at a height of around nine metres. The lower section of the hall houses additional shelving, goods-in, subsequent order picking, packaging stations and goods-out.

Eight lighting variants simulated

To plan the new lighting system, PBR Engineering GmbH carried out measurements in all work areas and analysed the need for improvement. The lighting task was extremely challenging due to the different room heights, visual tasks, and requirements for glare, orientation and atmosphere. Finally, eight lighting variants were simulated photometrically and objectively evaluated in terms of light quality, energy efficiency and sustainability.

High-performance lighting system with a sustainability bonus

In the product selection, the TECTON II continuous-row lighting system and its retrofit variant, TECTON D, came out on top. These systems achieve system efficacy of up to 211 lm/W with uniform illuminance and luminous flux of up to 10,700 lm/m. Since an older TECTON system was already in use at Porsche TVZ, the existing trunking could be reused. Only the battens had to be replaced.
In high-bay warehouses, wide-beam optics provide the required vertical illuminance levels.

Each zone individually optimised

129 forklifts support staff in storing and retrieving spare parts on the shelves. With homogeneous and glare-free illumination of the traffic routes and shelves, TECTON II now helps ensure that employees can reliably perform their tasks and remain productive even after several hours. For this purpose, different optics were used depending on the room height, use and visual task. In the high-bay warehouse, for example, wide beam optics provide the required vertical illuminance levels. Each zone has been individually optimised according to the range of tasks, visual task and power consumption.

Optimum visual conditions in all work areas

To improve light quality in less well-lit areas, new 15-pole TECTON II trunking and luminaires were also installed at the Porsche TVZ. A lighting infrastructure approximately 3,800 metres long was modernised using TECTON D and extended by a further 680 metres with TECTON II – all while operations continued. Ultimately, no comprehensive new installation was required for the retrofit, and the new TECTON II continuous-row lighting systems were ready for operation in a short time thanks to their tool-free installation using a click mechanism.
